GALLERY@DNA PRESENTS:
Karen Dow
Transitions
June 18 – July 15, 2009
Dance New Amsterdam (DNA) is pleased to Transitions, a collection of paintings by Karen Dow. Dow’s work will be exhibited June 18–July 15 in DNA’s 2nd Floor Gallery at 280 Broadway (entrance at 53 Chambers). This Exhibit has been funded in part by a grant from New York State Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick through the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
This exhibit is in conjunction with the world premiere of 8 Views: Fusiform Gyrus by Artist in Residence, Adele Myers. 8 Views: Fusiform Gyrus is a synthesizing process of eight points of view from a painter, composer, choreographer, and five dancers. The suite is inspired by and partially titled after Karen Dow's series of eight abstract formalist paintings exhibited at the Bellwether Gallery, NYC in 2006.
An opening reception will be held at DNA on Thursday, June 18th at 7:00pm.
DNA’s Gallery Hours are 9am – 9pm Monday – Sunday
There is no charge for admission to the exhibit.
Artist Statement
I would liken painting to gardening, or parenting, or solving problems. There’s an inherent struggle to find the whole system- take it apart- let it resolve- see things happen. Geometries become patterns. Colors evolve into spaces. Light evokes moods, mental noise, poetry, logic, and silence.
This latest group of paintings is the direct result of observation. My process begins with a found source image: usually from calendars, catalogs, and occasionally a photograph taken by a friend or family member. I start by making a color inventory of the image and then by laying out the composition on a pre-drawn grid. Through the process of painting decisions are made about light, color relationships and texture. Often the final result has very little resemblance to the source image, but it has provided me with a very definite starting point. I find this comforting as well as inspiring. – Karen Dow
