Looking for a place to live in New York

I'm 23 years old, coming from Montreal (Quebec, Canada) and I am gonna be an international student at DNA for 3 months, starting in January. I would need a furnished room (basic is really O.K.) starting December 29, 2009 until March 31, 2010. I would like to be close to DNA center or at least in a good area to get there by metro or bus. Note that I also would prefer to pay the price of a safe and fun place to live then a cheapest but creepiest place available...
